Why Maharashtra Cyber arrested Thop TV CEO Satish Venkateshwarlu?
Maharashtra Cyber Police has arrested Hyderabad-based IT engineer Satish Venkateshwarlu (28) for developing and running a mobile application to stream pirated content from various OTT platforms and satellite channels.
Viacom18 Media Pvt Ltd along with another broadcaster approached Maharashtra Cyber with their complaint alleging that the "rogue, standalone" application was airing their content without authorization.
What did the police say in the Thop TV case?
The police said
- Star India files case against Android software aggregator ahead of ICC World Test Championship final
- Star India had claimed that Thop TV is a rogue app that provides illegal access to video-on-demand content on TV including movies, shows, and live sports without the permission of the original owner.
- Viacom18 Media among other broadcasting channels had also approached the Maharastra Cyber Police with a similar complaint.
- App downloaders transfer money, even cryptocurrencies, to Satish Venkateshwarlu's bank account.
On hearing the news of Thop TV, there has been a ruckus on social media, because many users used to take advantage of this app.
